the story

This year Family Bible Chapel’s Christmas Eve program is spotlighting the common, working-people focus that is seen in everything Jesus is about.  Like the announcement of His birth.  The angels didn’t appear in Herod’s court or to the Sanhedrin.  They had the party in the fields with ... SHEPHERDS.  They were the ones who got the news direct.  Shepherds, slaves, street people from the wrong side of the tracks, the unclean, uncouth, common men, were the ones invited to see Him first.  Cool, huh?

We have had a bumper crop of kids over the last 10 years so the children’s choir is enormous and HEEEEERE THEY COME!!  Every color of kid in God's Creation swarms onto the platform and spills down the steps.  At first it looks like chaos will break out.  That is, until the music starts.  The moment they hear the hip-hop beat, they just start grinnin’ and swayin’.  There’s the down beat, the sway, the grins.  Let the celebration begin!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS!!!

Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
This day we pray You can feel
The love true in our hearts for You
Love true in our hearts for You

Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
Angels singing glory to our God
Glad tidings to all men
Glad tidings to all men

Happy birthday Jesus
Please accept these gifts from us
Thankful hearts and voices lifted
Praising God for sending You
Praise God for sending You

Happy birthday Jesus
Celebration glorious
Dancing, Singing for salvation
Came to earth when You were born
Came to earth when You were born

Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus
Happy birthday Jesus ...

At the last “Happy Birthday!!!”, our teen-rock band kicks off their version of THIS CHRISTMAS, contrasting the tinsel and commercialism of the world’s Christ-less “Winter Holiday” with the global birthday party for the our Savior-King.   The room goes dark and our vision is filled with projected scenes of Christmas decorations, Santa Clauses and crowded shopping malls alternating with pictures of the actual countryside around Bethlehem with shepherds and their sheep.

THIS CHRISTMAS

This Christmas
There’s joy in the air
This Christmas
Its a family fair

This Christmas
The excitement is back
This Christmas
There’s no doubt about that!

chorus
Expecting Santa Claus
Is so much fun
But old St Nickalus,
He’s not the only one
There’s Someone else
That we’re waiting to see
His birthday is what
Christmas happens to be
Little girls and little boys
Can’t wait to see all their toys
Merry Christmas
Happy Christmas to all of you
Merry Christmas
I hope this Christmas
All your dreams will come true

This Christmas
The meaning is clear
This Christmas
His coming is near

This Christmas
Look deep in your heart
This Christmas
It could be your new start

chorus

Now the screens envelope us in the starry Christmas night sky.  Our view drifts down to the horizon.  Christmas lights outline the houses and we zoom in, peering into warm households where children haven’t slept a wink.  You can see their little eyes tightly held shut.  Dad struggles to keep his eyes open and focused on the “easy assembly” directions for that toy scattered in pieces around him.

A CHRISTMAS MORNING HOLIDAY

Stars are shining brightly
Moon is tilted slightly
Cities oh so sightly
Children sleeping lightly
Nightfall gives way to the dawn

Not a frown or hint of sadness
Mistletoe and holly
Santa Claus so jolly
Singing happy birthday
To the Baby born on this day
It was so long ago
He’s alive today tho’
King of all creation
Born to bring salvation
Christmas morning holiday
A Christmas morning holiday

Slowly during that chorus the dawn begins to light the sky.  We see the smiles and hear the squeals of laughter as the children discover the very things they had been hoping for around the tree and the beautiful, carved nativity scene.  Then the bike and skates and little tricycle are all test-driven in the bright morning sunshine.

Back in the house we see the aftermath of all that has happened and a kind of hush falls as they all stand taking it in.  Dad clears a spot on the couch and slumps into it like a rag doll in front of the tree.  He didn’t notice Ruthie sitting between him and the nativity scene until she turned around and tilted her little head to the side and squinted at him.  He could see she had a serious question so he pulled her up in his lap and cradled her in his arms.  After only a few seconds of warm silence, the question came...“Daddy... What is Chrissstmassst?  Pastor Bill said it was more than getting presents from Santa Claus.”  She pointed at the carved shape of a baby in a manger and said, “Did he mean that Baby Jesus was born?  Daddy?  What is Chrissstmassst, weally?”

Mom moved closer and looked deeply into those little confused eyes and sings the simple answer:

THE REAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS TIME

The real meaning of Christmas time
Is much more than food and wine
And presents under trees of lights
There’s much more to Christmas time

The real meaning of Christmas time
Lies deep in our hearts and minds
In a manger long ago
The beginning of Christmas time

chorus
Show us that Star so bright
That broke the still and silent night
Angels voices sing
Songs of praise to the baby King

The real meaning of Christmas time
Majesty of Grace Divine
Freely given to you and me
That’s the meaning of Christmas time

chorus
Show us the bright starlight
Piercing still and silent night
Let us hear those angels sing
Welcome our eternal King!

Ruthie pushes herself off my lap, her gaze fixed on the little figures gathered around the tiny manger.  The straw suddenly becomes real.  The animals are real but the crowd of people are gone.  A young girl, barely a teenager, is doing her daily routine of bringing in fresh straw and feeding the oxen, donkey and sheep.  The dim light in the mud shelter explodes brighter than the brightest noonday Mary had ever seen.  The impact of the light’s brightness threw her to the ground.  She was paralyzed with fear.  Thoughts flashed through her mind, “Am I dead? Did the world explode?!”  She heard the angel’s voice long before her eyes would focus on the figure in front of her.

MARY

Mary
Blessed above all others
Mary
Chosen one of God
Don’t be afraid
You’ll conceive
And you’ll bear a Son
After God, the Most High
Will o’ershadow you
The Child you will bear
Will be the Son of God
And you shall give
To Him the name
Jesus

As Gabriel finishes delivering the news the light intensifies and transports us nine months into the future.  This time the bright, whiteness is bathing hillsides, sheep and shepherds just below the little town of Bethlehem.  AND THE SOUND!!!

YOUR KING IS BORN TODAY!

Suddenly Heaven’s Host all singing
Across the sky the praises ringing
Glory to God in highest Heaven
Peace on Earth to all is Given
Don’t be afraid
Don’t be afraid
Your King is born today
Your King is born today

Follow the Star
It shows you the way
Straight to the place
Where the Christ Child lay
Follow the Star
It shows you the way
Jesus the King is born today
Jesus the King is born today

Somewhere far away, about a two-year drive to the east, a caravan is silhouetted against the bright night backdrop.  The travelers, that era’s Leonardo Divinci, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking, had been waiting for a sign in the heavens that would mark the birth of the great King of Heaven and Earth. That Star appeared as expected and the earth’s wisest men set out to follow it bringing their fortunes to lay at His feet.

WE HAVE SEEN HIS STAR
w & m Bill Batstone

We have seen His star rising in the night
We followed it to find the king
Who came to bring a reign of light
Underneath its beam He was born tonight
And we’ll worship Him
(We will worship Him)
We will worship Him this night

Though we’ve traveled far
To our journey’s end
We have found the greatest hope
The world won’t be the same again
We have seen His star
We have seen the light
And we’ll worship Him
(We will worship Him)
We will worship Him this night

We have seen His star
We have seen His star
We have seen His star
We have seen His star
We have seen the light
And we’ll worship Him
We’ll praise the newborn King of kings
We will worship Him
We’ll praise Him with the gifts we bring
We will worship Him
(We will worship Him)
We will worship Him this night
We have seen His star
We have seen His star
We have seen His star

One shepherd is shading his eyes from the blinding light that is flooding the whole valley below Bethlehem.  No use, the light makes even the dirty sheep glow with radiant white light.   When he opens his eyes he’s looking up into the heavenly face of one of the singing angels.  The angel speaks to him, points and gives instructions.

STAR OF BETHLEHEM

I’m just a loner
A lowly workin’ man
Watchin’ these sheep
That belong to another man
I’ve got a wife
Three children in Galilee
Just lived day-to-day
‘Til on this hill I see
The Star of Bethlehem (x2)

An angel appeared
And spoke right to me
Said, Don’t be afraid
There’s somethin’ you’ll wanna see
Laid in a manger
In that little town below
Lies this world’s Saviour
I just knew you’d wanna know
The Star of Bethlehem (x4)

I walked down the mountain
Just followed the stream of light
Coming from Heaven
To give this old shepherd sight
Into the courtyard
Through excited and festive cries
I walked to the manger
And looked right into the eyes of
The Star of Bethlehem (x4)

Now the shepherd kneels by a feeding trough hewn out of the limestone.  Hardened, weathered eyes soften as they peer over the edge into the face of the newborn King.  A callused hand cradles a tiny hand.  This is a normal, regular little baby; probably one of thousands born on this day, the same as every other day.  But this little boy is THE KING OF KINGS, LORD OF LORDS, PRINCE OF PEACE, THE SON OF GOD!

JUST A SWEET LITTLE BABY

Just a sweet little baby lyin’ in a manger
A sweet little boy, He’s just a stranger
But I see in His eyes
Everything I’ll ever need
When I look into His eyes
I see all I’ll ever need

Just a sweet little baby lyin’ in a manger
A sweet little boy, He’s just a stranger
But all I have I lay down at His feet
All I have I lay down at His feet

chorus
Cause He’s the King of kings
He is the Lord of lords
He is the Son of God
The Prince of Peace
And He’s right here in front of me
Just a baby, just baby

Just a sweet little baby lyin’ in a manger
A sweet little boy, He’s just a stranger
But up on the mountain
I heard the angels praise His name
Up there on the mountain
I heard the angels praise His name

Just a sweet little baby lyin’ in a manger
A sweet little boy, He’s just a stranger
But from this day on
I know the promised King has come
From this day on
I’ll tell the world their King has come

chorus

[The hand that had been the shepherd’s becomes the dad’s and he speaks intimately and passionately to his children...]  Ruthie. Ann.  David.  That little baby grew up.  He read the Scriptures.  He found Himself right there in the words of the Psalms and Isaiah.  He had discovered who He really was by the time He was twelve, and that’s where we find ourselves, too!  I’m sure a lot of people thought they knew Jesus.  But if they ever met Him face-to-face and looked into His eyes and felt His touch, Jesus would suddenly be much more than they could have ever imagined!

The little hand that gripped that old shepherd’s rough finger was the same Hand that was nailed to a cross and bled and died.  That same Hand reached out to show it’s wound to one of His doubting brothers after He was risen.  And that same Hand took my broken life and made it whole and wholly His for eternity.  Kid’s, I learned the Bible stories, the same ones you have learned.  I knew Jesus and talked to Him, just like you do.  I was convinced that He was everything I had heard He was.  But one day, I heard His voice.  I looked into His eyes and felt Him touch me deep down in the hidden center of my life.  Immediately, Jesus became more than my idea of Him.  Jesus the concept became the Yahveh-shua of the Bible, alive and tangible!  He became much more than “real”.  He had always been the Savior, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace, but He became all that to me.  He’s more than just a story on Christmas or Easter.  Jesus is much more than that to me.

JESUS IS MORE

Jesus the baby-King
Whose birth we’re celebrating
Good reason for a holiday
But He’s more
More than a boy born in a manger
More than a story of the past

chorus
Jesus is more
He’s more than history
More than a memory
More than reality
More than eternity
He’s more, much more to me

Jesus the Saviour
Born to be Heaven’s only Door
How could we ask for any more
But He’s more
More than a boy born in a manger
More than a man who lived and died

chorus
