How to get the most out of Hungry Bible

OT

32:23 But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the LORD, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.

NT

7:7-8 These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far away. Their worship is a farce, for they replace God’s commands with their own man-made teachings. For you ignore God’s specific laws and substitute your own traditions.

:20-23 And then he added, “It is the thought-life that defiles you. For from within, out of a persons heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, eagerness for lustful pleasure, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you and make you unacceptable to God.”

8:33-38 Jesus turned and looked at his disciples and then said to Peter very sternly, “Get away from me, Satan! You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” Then he called his disciples and the crowds to come over and listen. “If any of you wants to be my follower,” he told them, “you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will find true life. And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul? If a person is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, I, the Son of Man, will be ashamed of that person when I return in the glory of my Father with the holy angels.”

OT Flash Points

Inheritance vs. Loyalty
Inheritance – about separating boundaries, no overlap, self-protection
Loyalty – toward the whole nation – servanthood

NT Flash Points

Seeing from the human view is the same as blindness – and is based in trying to keep your life for yourself
Some will see God’s view – the Transfiguration
If you want to be great – be the servant
Don’t let your passion be released and dissipated in “Power Wagon” reactions (rage) and self-defense mechanisms
Your passion/salt must be used to season, not destroy

Perspective

Abandonment to God is not for something, to get or to accomplish something
True abandonment to God is a sovereign, willful preference for Him
Note to the “mentally ill” – Why have you not taken the step to receive stewardship of your disposition?
