Jeremiah 7-9/John 19-21
Judgment & Repentance
OT – 7:8-10 Do you think that because the Temple is here you will never suffer? Don’t fool yourselves! Do you really think you can steal, murder, commit adultery, lie, and worship Baal and all those other new gods of yours, and then come here and stand before me in my Temple and chant, “We are safe!”–only to go right back to all those evils again?
:13-15 While you were doing these wicked things, says the LORD, I spoke to you about it repeatedly, but you would not listen. I called out to you, but you refused to answer. So just as I destroyed Shiloh, I will now destroy this Temple that was built to honor my name, this Temple that you trust for help, this place that I gave to you and your ancestors. And I will send you into exile, just as I did your relatives, the people of Israel.
OT Flash Point
“Final” destruction – Judgment of God’s people
NT – 19:28-30 Jesus knew that everything was now finished, and to fulfill the Scriptures he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
NT Flash Point
Final destruction – Judgment of God’s Son
Judgment is always meant to lead to forgiveness & intimate relationship
Perspective
The real question is not “What is God’s will?”
It is “Am I willing for God’s will?”
Proud Holiness?
No such thing
Holiness comes in repentance
SV-
Humble yourself
The sinner’s place
We must go there to meet God’s grace
Is “church” a place, a gathering of sinners in the sinner’s place?
