Be who you are – in Jesus
Judges 1 /Proverbs 15 /1Thessalonians 1-5

Tutorial for first-timers

OT

Judges 1:31-32 The tribe of Asher also failed to drive out the residents of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob. In fact, because they did not drive them out, the Canaanites dominated the land where the people of Asher lived.

Proverbs 15:33 Fear of the LORD teaches a person to be wise; humility precedes honor.

NT

1:4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you

4:15-18 According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.

OT Flash Points

How the west was won

Proverbs: The LORD is far from the wicked but hears the prayers of the righteous
A cheerful look = joy to the heart = health (Countenance gives the entry for the cure)

NT Flash Points

Paul was not preparing sermons and giving the same cookie-cutter words to each church
It was the same message but it was personal and fresh and spontaneous
“not just with words, but with power”
The Holy Spirit is then confirming the words to the individual hearts as the Word of God to them

Perspective

In following a madman or God incarnate – conflict is inevitable
Believe the Holy Spirit – be willing to obey, yield to the pressure of His hand
God expects only the life He has installed
Live that life instead of calculating how to imitate Christ
When doubt comes up in your heart about whether to obey in a matter, STOP
I can’t take a moral holiday, even for a moment, and still be moral
