What can you actually control?

How to get the most out of Hungry Bible

OT

18:2-4 “Why do you quote this proverb in the land of Israel: ‘The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children’s mouths pucker at the taste?’ As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, you will not say this proverb anymore in Israel. For all people are mine to judge–both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins will be the one who dies.”

NT

17:1-5 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “There will always be temptations to sin, but how terrible it will be for the person who does the tempting. It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck than to face the punishment in store for harming one of these little ones. I am warning you! If another believer sins, rebuke him; then if he repents, forgive him. Even if he wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, forgive him.” One day the apostles said to the Lord, “We need more faith; tell us how to get it.”

OT Flash Points

Turn back and live!
Each person is rewarded for goodness, punished for wickedness

NT Flash Points

There will always be temptations
But pity the person who does the tempting
Who is this Jesus?
He uses, as an illustration, a completely wicked king to show that the Kingdom was not coming right away
God’s will being done does not depend on my will complying
Only my personal wellbeing and fruitfulness depends on my righteousness

Perspective

We must not interfere with God’s order in others
Trying to be a “little providence”
A saint is never consciously a saint
A saint is consciously dependent on God
