When we looked at what makes people “God’s People,” we opened a universe of discovery. From His perspective, He is saying, “You are My people. Mine. I have chosen to make you and purchased you to be My joy.” Stepping toward His passion to have relationship that, clearly to Him, is a priceless treasure to be sought after with complete abandon, is the model for us to follow to accomplish the Shema. Yes, abandon all other loves. The chief “other love” for fallen man, if we can even countenance the thought, is our self. Why should we even consider that? Because, as I have discovered while being discipled by Jesus, I/man/all humans have, since Adam broke relationship with his Father, been locked in a mirrored bubble in which we can only see and love ourselves. Why was man sentenced to that prison? It has become steadily clearer over these years that the bottom-line answer was disclosed by Jesus Himself as a foundation for the commission He gave the Apostle Paul at Macedonia.
He included that answer in his letter to the Romans in chapter 11. Verse 2: No, God has not rejected and disowned His people. Verse 8: As it is written, God gave them a spirit (an attitude) of stupor, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear, down to this day. 9: And David says, Let their table (their feasting) become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a just retribution; 10: Let their eyes be darkened (dimmed) so that they cannot see, and make them bend their back [beneath their burden] forever. Sound familiar at all?
Verse 32: For God has consigned (imprisoned) all men to disobedience, only that He may have mercy on them all [alike]. In the following verses, Paul is lifted into the ecstasy of the wonder of God’s mind. “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unfathomable are His decisions! And how mysterious are His ways!” 36: For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. [For all things originate with him and come from Him; all things live through Him, and all things center in and tend to consummate and end in Him.] To Him be glory forever! Amen!
Please, take a few moments to look into this incredible lover of our souls, ask His Spirit to open the dimmed eyes of your heart and reveal His love for you. The revelation of God’s heart and His mind is the work of His Spirit and if we ask, and keep asking, He will keep accomplishing that work in us. I am persuaded that He who gave me a new mind and a new life, is able to preserve what He has given to the end of this life and then crown it with the full completion of His joy.
