What are you after?
1Samuel 29-31 / Luke 10-12

How to get the most out of Hungry Bible

OT

30:7-8 Then he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring me the ephod!” So Abiathar brought it. Then David asked the LORD, “Should I chase them? Will I catch them?” And the LORD told him, “Yes, go after them. You will surely recover everything that was taken from you!”

:23-25 But David said, “No, my brothers! Don’t be selfish with what the LORD has given us. He has kept us safe and helped us defeat the enemy. Do you think anyone will listen to you when you talk like this? We share and share alike–those who go to battle and those who guard the equipment.” From then on David made this a law for all of Israel, and it is still followed.

NT

10:1-3 The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them on ahead in pairs to all the towns and villages he planned to visit. These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. Pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest, and ask him to send out more workers for his fields. Go now, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.

:17-22 When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!” “Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan falling from heaven as a flash of lightning! And I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. But don’t rejoice just because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered as citizens of heaven.” Then Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit and said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding the truth from those who think themselves so wise and clever, and for revealing it to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way. My Father has given me authority over everything. No one really knows the Son except the Father, and no one really knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

OT Flash Points

End of Saul’s life and dynasty
God takes David out of the army that was to destroy Saul
In the meantime, David’s own family had been taken captive
He immediately asks God, should I go after them?
His impulse to act was trumped by his impulse to talk to God…
God’s response? – “David is a man after my own heart”

NT Flash Points

Will you be a neighbor? Or be the one who asks, “Who is my neighbor?”
Beware of all kinds of greed
Don’t be concerned about food and clothes and superficial stuff
Set your focus on God and His Kingdom so to give a ready answer to Him in His surprise visits
Remember, you are much more valuable to Him than birds and He personally takes care of each of them
Two basic threads in a robe of righteousness: Jesus’ Words are 1. spirit & 2. truth
Luke 11:13 – “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the holy Spirit to those who ask him!
Luke 11:23 – “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
