How to get the most out of Hungry Bible

OT

13:8-9 Then Abram talked it over with Lot. “This arguing between our herdsmen has got to stop,” he said. “After all, we are close relatives! I’ll tell you what we’ll do. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want that area over there, then I’ll stay here. If you want to stay in this area, then I’ll move on to another place.”

15:4-6 Then the LORD said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own to inherit everything I am giving you.” Then the LORD brought Abram outside beneath the night sky and told him, “Look up into the heavens and count the stars if you can. Your descendants will be like that–too many to count!” And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD declared him righteous because of his faith.

NT

12:18-21 “Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen. He is my Beloved, and I am very pleased with him. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not fight or shout; he will not raise his voice in public. He will not crush those who are weak, or quench the smallest hope, until he brings full justice with his final victory. And his name will be the hope of all the world.”

OT Flash Points

Abraham is the example of what God is looking for in men and women, boys and girls
His basic foundation for his actions and motives was:
God is faithful to His Word
His nature [disposition] is reality
I’ll bank everything on that
All the outward rules [Law] are naturally and unconsciously followed if that is the basis

NT Flash Points

The righteous example of Abraham faded
God provides an eternal, living standard – Jesus, God, the Servant King
By Him we are convinced that we can live His life and that is who we are
We don’t lose our identity, we discover who we really are; who He made us to be
We are invited to come to Him because who He is in us is who He created us to be

Perspective

Our vows and resolutions end in denial because we don’t have the power to carry them out
There is only one who can carry them out
Come to Him
